Internship in Estonia

The study visit on CLIL methodology application within the framework of the MultiEd project took place in 3 cities of Estonia – Tallinn, Tartu, and Narva in October 25-29, 2021.

The internship programme was packed with the thematic panel discussions, engaging activities, enlightening visits to a bunch of educational institutions of primary, secondary and tertiary level of education connected in a great “circle of life” — the circle of learning foreign languages for life. Thus, the practical implementation of CLIL was observed at kindergarten Tareke, Tartu Aleksander Puškini school, Tallinna Pae Gümnaasium, Narva College and the University of Tartu.

During the study visit the Ukrainian team got acquainted with the experience of Estonian colleagues in CLIL methodology application, shared their record of working, emphasizing the role of language immersion at the lessons of English.  Furthermore, teaching principles and teacher cooperation strategies as well as the principles of multilingual education were discussed. The internship in Estonia was by a significant event, that is, the 8th International ELT Conference “Trends and issues in CLIL and ELT” which took place both in-person and online. During the Conference a wide variety of scientific and methodological issues in teaching ESL as well as CLIL, were provided at plenaries by the representatives of European and Great Britain scientists, namely Phil Ball (University of the Basque Country, Spain), Hans-Werner Huneke (University of Education in Heidelberg, Germany), Sue Garton (Aston University,  UK), Elisabeth Wielander (Aston University, UK), Enn Veldi (University of Tartu, Estonia). The keynote speakers Darío Luis Banegas (University of Edinburgh, UK), Galina Maslova (Pskov State University, Russia), Jacqueline Hadel (English Language Fellow at Narva College, Estonia) and a representative of U.S. Embassy in Estonia Jennifer Uhler illuminated and proposed strategies in further CLIL implementation in view of the multicultural and, consequently, multilingual aspect  in teaching English.
